That's When The Fight Started

MY FRIENDS

THESE ARE FUNNY AND I WANTED TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU ALL. THANKS SHERELLE!!

That's When the Fight Started . . .

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive....so, I took her to a gas station.....and that's when the fight started....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Milller Light for $14.95. Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95. I told her the beer. would make her look better at night than the cold cream. And that's when the fight started....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too'. And then the fight started.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her? ''Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since." ''My God!", says my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And then the fight started.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah , well I couldn't believe it.... he was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY!!!' So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?' And that's when the fight started.....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." And that's when the fight started.....

Remember life is short. Love Much, Laugh Often, Live Well!

DOES HEALTHCARE CARE??

MY FRIENDS

HEALTHCARE CONCERNS ARE INCREASING ACROSS THE NATION. I HEARD ABOUT THIS REPORT ON THE NEWS THIS MORNING AND SOME OF THE STATISTICS WERE FRIGHTENING. BEING EMPLOYED IN THE HEALTH CARE FIELD AND SEEING FIRST HAND SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT WE FACE, IT DIFFICULT TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AS WE AGE AND THE NATION IS TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD TO A UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PLAN. I DON’T KNOW WHAT OUR NEW PRESIDENT HAS IN STORE FOR COMMERCIAL HEALTH CARE PLANS, HOWEVER THE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER WILL HAVE TO BE FUNDED EXPONENTIALLY IN ORDER TO ASSIST THE UNINSURED AND THE UNDERINSURED

THIS IS AN EXCERPT OF THE REPORT PUBLISHED BY THE NATIONAL COALITION ON HEALTH CARE. TO VIEW THE REPORT IN ITS ENTIRETY GO TO http://www.nchc.org/

FACTS ON HEALTH CARE COSTS

Introduction

By several measures, health care spending continues to rise at the fastest rate in our history.

In 2007, total national health expenditures were expected to rise 6.9 percent – two times the rate of inflation. Total spending was $2.3 TRILLION in 2007, or $7600 per person.

In 2007, employer health insurance premiums increased by 6.1 percent – two times the rate of inflation. The annual premium for an employer health plan covering a family of four averaged nearly $12,100. The annual premium for single coverage averaged over $4,400.2

Experts agree that our health care system is riddled with inefficiencies, excessive administrative expenses, inflated prices, poor management, and inappropriate care, waste and fraud. These problems significantly increase the cost of medical care and health insurance for employers and workers and affect the security of families.

National Health Care Spending
● In 2007, health care spending in the United States reached $2.3 trillion, and was projected to reach $3 trillion in 2011.1 Health care spending is projected to reach $4.2 trillion by 2016.
● Health care spending is 4.3 times the amount spent on national defense.
● In 2005, the United States spent 16 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on health care. It is projected that the percentage will reach 20 percent by 2016.
● Although nearly 47 million Americans are uninsured, the United States spends more on health care than other industrialized nations, and those countries provide health insurance to all their citizens.
● Health care spending accounted for 10.9 percent of the GDP in Switzerland, 10.7 percent in Germany, 9.7 percent in Canada and 9.5 percent in France, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Employer and Employee Health Insurance Costs
● The annual premium that a health insurer charges an employer for a health plan covering a family of four averaged $12,100 in 2007. Workers contributed nearly $3,300, or 10 percent more than they did in 2006. The annual premiums for family coverage significantly eclipsed the gross earnings for a full-time, minimum wage worker ($10,712).
● Since 2000, employment-based health insurance premiums have increased 100 percent, compared to cumulative inflation of 24 percent and cumulative wage growth of 21 percent during the same period.
● Health insurance expenses are the fastest growing cost component for employers. Unless something changes dramatically, health insurance costs will overtake profits by 2008.
● According to the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust, premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance in the United States have been rising four times faster on average than workers’ earnings since 2000.
● The average employee contribution to company-provided health insurance has increased more than 143 percent since 2000. Average out-of-pocket costs for deductibles, co-payments for medications, and co-insurance for physician and hospital visits rose 115 percent during the same period.
● The percentage of Americans under age 65 whose family-level, out-of-pocket spending for health care, including health insurance, that exceeds $2,000 a year, rose from 37.3 percent in 1996 to 43.1 percent in 2003 – a 16 percent increase.

The Impact of Rising Health Care Costs
● National surveys show that the primary reason people are uninsured is the high cost of health insurance coverage.
● Economists have found that rising health care costs correlate to drops in health insurance coverage.
● Nearly one-quarter (23 percent) of the uninsured reported changing their way of life significantly in order to pay medical bills.
● In a Wall Street Journal-NBC Survey almost 50 percent of the American public say the cost of health care is their number one economic concern.
● In a USA Today/ABC News survey, 80 percent of Americans said that they were dissatisfied (60 percent were very dissatisfied) with high national health care spending.
● Rising health care costs is the top personal pocketbook concern for Democratic voters (45%) and Republicans (35%), well ahead of higher taxes or retirement security.
● A recent study by Harvard University researchers found that the average out-ofpocket medical debt for those who filed for bankruptcy was $12,000. The study noted that 68 percent of those who filed for bankruptcy had health insurance. In addition, the study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly the result of medical expenses. Every 30 seconds in the United States someone files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious health problem.
● If one member of a family is uninsured and has an accident, a hospital stay, or a costly medical treatment, the resulting medical bills can affect the economic stability of the whole family.
● A new survey shows that more than 25 percent said that housing problems resulted from medical debt, including the inability to make rent or mortgage payments and the development of bad credit ratings.
● A survey of Iowa consumers found that in order to cope with rising health insurance costs, 86 percent said they had cut back on how much they could save, and 44 percent said that they have cut back on food and heating expenses.
● Retiring elderly couples will need $200,000 in savings just to pay for the most basic medical coverage.18 Many experts believe that this figure is conservative and that $300,000 may be a more realistic number.
● According to a recent report, the United States has $480 billion in excess spending each year in comparison to Western European nations that have universal health insurance coverage. The costs are mainly associated with excess administrative costs and poorer quality of care.
● The United States spends six times more per capita on the administration of the health care system than its peer Western European nations.

Time for Action on Reining in Health Care Costs
Policymakers and government officials agree that health care costs must be controlled. But they disagree on the best ways to address rapidly escalating health spending and health insurance premiums. Some favor price controls and imposing strict budgets on health care spending. Others believe free market competition is the best way to solve the problems. Public health advocates believe that if all Americans adopted healthy lifestyles, health care costs would decrease as people required less medical care. There appears to be no agreement on a single solution to health care’s high price tag. Many approaches may be used to control costs. What we do know is if the rate of escalation in health care spending and health insurance premiums continues at current trends, the cost of inaction will severely affect employer’s bottom lines and consumer’s pocketbooks. (OH YEAH, BUY THE WAY, LET’S NOT FORGET PEOPLE’S LIVES)

CAN YOU SAY SWISS CHEESE

MY FRIENDS

THIS IS AN ARTICLE FROM THE PLAIN DEALER, CLEVELAND'S MAIN NEWSPAPER, IT APPEARS IN ITS ENTIRETY, EXCEPT WERE NOTED:

IT'S CRAZY SCARY THAT THE EUCLID CORRIDOR AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS WILL STILL BE UNDER CONSTRUCTION WHILE WINTER IS FAST APPROACHING. AS IF A CLEVELAND WINTER IS NOT BAD ENOUGH, AN EXPECTED SHORTAGE OF SALT FOR THE ROADS, AND THE NORMAL DAMAGE THAT PLOW TRUCKS ARE KNOWN TO CAUSE TO OUR STREETS, WE NOW HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE MAIN STREET TRANSECTING CLEVELAND COLLAPSING BENEATH US.

WOW!!

The RTA plans to test concrete along seven miles of Euclid Avenue to see if it contains a chemical that could erode steel bars, causing the road to crumble.

Concrete samples will be taken from locations along the road and checked for calcium chloride, which is added to concrete to help it set faster. (A short cut to save money) The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Agency did not give approval for the chemical to be used in its recently unveiled Euclid Corridor HealthLine project, said Mike Schipper, deputy general manager of for engineering.

McTech Corp. of Cleveland did the work on the primary section of road under scrutiny, Schipper said. The $200 million HealthLine project provides transportation from Public Square through University Circle to the Stokes/Windermere station in East Cleveland.

During the project, Euclid Avenue was paved in three sections and each had a contractor, said Schipper. The sections were Public Square to the Inner Belt, from that point to just past East 79th Street and from there to the city limits.

Concrete from trucks and the road underwent several strength tests during construction. Schipper said 27 areas throughout the corridor did not conform to the standards, which is not unusual in a large project. They were or will be replaced. But no concrete was tested for additives, such as chemicals.

The only steel in the road are dowel bars at the expansion joints, which are about 100 feet apart, Schipper said. The bars are covered with epoxy to help protect the steel from corrosion.

RTA is testing for calcium chloride after allegations about its use were raised last month by WOIO Channel 19. (Carl Monday should be the Chief of Police, he is the best detective in Cleveland)

At issue is the concrete supplied in the Public Square section. Perk Co. was the primary
contractor on that stretch and its subcontractor was McTech. TTL Meadows Group tested the quality of the concrete. A Plain Dealer investigation in September showed family business connections among the three firms.

RTA's construction management consultant, Washington Group International, reviewed the concrete pours by checking documentation and found no evidence calcium chloride was used, RTA General Manager Joe Calabrese said in an e-mail sent Friday to business and community leaders.

Schipper said concrete samples of four inches in diameter and 10-feet deep will be taken from the entire project and it will not affect traffic flow along Euclid Avenue. He expects them to be sent to a lab within days and take two weeks for results. (A lot of SH*T can fall into a 4 inch, 10 foot hole randomly taken out of the street throught the city, that can also add to the corrison of the street. It used to be Caveat Emptor: "Let the Buyer Beware" but how about Cleveat Drivemptor: "Let the Driver Beware".

Garbage Truck

Thanks Sherelle for this one.

Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.

We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run aroundfull of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage truckstake over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Lovethe people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Why Canada's Banks Don't Need Help
By Erik Heinrich

In the midst of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, Canada has joined the ranks of governments that in recent weeks stepped up to help banks cope with more fallout from bad subprime mortgages. In Canada's case, however, the reason for the assistance is a little different from some of its G7 partners. Unlike banks in the U.S., Britain and Germany, which needed to be bailed out with hundreds of billions of dollars in new capital, Canada's major banks are solid and solvent. They don't need any help to work through their subprime exposure.

So why did Ottawa agree to insure the money they routinely borrow from other banks, a practice that keeps their credit operations liquid? Ironically, the troubled non-Canadian institutions that received capital injections and loan guarantees in other countries now carry a government seal of approval that tilts the playing field in their favor when it comes to borrowing. That left Canada's big banks, including Scotiabank, TD Bank Financial Group, RBC Royal Bank and CIBC, at a competitive disadvantage. So the government acted to level the field, not to aid troubled banks.

Why has Canada withstood the subprime tornado better than other countries, and should the Canadian banking system be a model for G7 and G20 leaders when they gather in Washington on Nov. 15? Consider that the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, an influential think tank whose annual conference attracts the likes of Bill Gates and Tony Blair, earlier this month ranked Canada's banking system as the soundest in the world. The U.S. came in at No. 40, Germany and Britain ranked 39 and 44 respectively. (Switzerland was No. 16 just ahead of Namibia.) "For Canadian banks, having higher capital ratios than anyone else in the world is a source of pride," says analyst Mario Mendonca with Toronto-based investment bank Genuity Capital Markets.

The average capital reserves for Canada's Big Six banks — defined as Tier 1 capital (common shares, retained earnings and non-cumulative preferred shares) to risk-adjusted assets — is 9.8%, several percentage points above the 7% required by Canada's federal bank regulator. That's a little better than major U.S. commercial banks like Bank of America, but significantly higher than an average capital ratio of about 4% for U.S. investment banks and 3.3% for European commercial banks.

Another factor that helped make Canada the new gold standard in banking was Ottawa's decision in the late 1980s to allow commercials banks to acquire investment dealers on Toronto's Bay Street, the country's financial hub. As a result, these institutions are subject to the same strict rules as commercial banks, while U.S. investment dealers are only subject to light supervision from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, of course, will now be under the Federal Reserve's supervision since they have been chartered as bank holding companies.

Canada's banks make bad investments on occasion. When Toronto-based CIBC, Canada's most aggressive big bank, took $3.5 billion in charges against the U.S. subprime debacle, federal regulators quickly arrived on the scene. But here's the difference: CIBC ended up selling $2.94 billion worth of its own shares in the first quarter of this year to shore up capital reserves. "The relationship between government and banks is a positive one," says federal Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty. "We have a lot of discussions and regular meetings. The common goal is a sound financial system." (In the United States, it’s all about profit.)

Says Finance Minister Flaherty, "The credit crisis we're facing is the result of unbridled greed. We need to bridle greed." Perhaps when world leaders sit down in Washington next month to forge a 21st-century New Deal for the global financial system, it may have more than a smattering of Canadian banking know-how.
